I am in the same boat as you chasing our native orchids and photographing them. As of now I've seen and photographed nearly 50 NA native species and 38 of Ohio's 46 native species. I'd love to take you to the population featured in this post if you could muster a drive to west-central Ohio! Arethusa bulbosa is one of the few remaining native Ohio orchids I NEED to see and photograph and have my sights set on it this late spring. I need to ask around for a consistent spot to see it, as Ohio only has a single population left in a large bog in the NE section. I searched unsuccessfully for it last June but was definitely too late to the game. Maybe this year!Andrew Lane Gibsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01555125434346996812noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7022216829037318291.post-19974464058361556142012-02-22T16:36:43.902-05:002012-02-22T16:36:43.902-05:00Followed a link from GYBO blog to find this postin...Followed a link from GYBO blog to find this posting. I love it. I have spent the last 10 years chasing Indiana orchids. I have photographed all but one of the 43 extant orchid taxa with populations still to be found in the state. Last year I chased those that are extirpated. In Michigan I found Arethusa bulbosa in a bog where Plantanthera leucophaea can also be found. Although P. leucophaea is currently found in Indiana the location is a well kept secret by my friends at the Indiana Department of Nature Preserves. In addition the the Michigan location I am aware of a cemetery in Illinois and a prairie north of Chicago where this species can be found. Next summer I hope to "nail it" in one of those three locations. It sounds as if your site is flourishing. That's great to know. Thank's for the wonderful post and photos.Petehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09738292476743125323noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7022216829037318291.post-7938954870019936052011-08-09T16:06:39.318-04:002011-08-09T16:06:39.318-04:00Very cool,I hear you on the heart rate!
